Your Guide to a Peanut-Free Montclair

I’m not happy that salmonella peanut butter is making people sick, as Kristen posted recently, but at least this is one illness my family doesn’t have to worry about. We just have to worry about peanuts in general. They could kill my daughter.

Here are the bakeries, shops and peanut-free places I’ve found around Montclair.

My daughter was almost 3-years-old when we found out she had a severe peanut allergy. If you are a parent of a child with a food allergy, you know how scary and life-changing it is. When the allergist called to tell me the results of her blood test and confirmed that she had a potentially life-threatening peanut allergy, I felt like the walls were caving in. From that day on, there needed to be an Epi-pen with her at all times. As a family, we needed to change the way we shopped, what we ate, and where we went.

Since her diagnosis, we now avoid Asian restaurants because they use peanuts and peanut oil. Ice cream shops and most bakeries are off limits because of cross-contamination. Cross-contamination occurs when a food that does not itself contain any allergens is tainted with an allergen during food preparation, cooking, storage or serving. I learned to read labels for harmful ingredients and to find out if the products were manufactured in a facility that uses peanuts.

Scary.  Thankfully, life with food allergies is getting easier as more and more children are diagnosed with them. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 3 million children have a food allergy. This is an 18 percent increase from the reports 11 years ago. I did my research, and then life didn’t seem so scary. There are many resources out there for families with food allergies, many of them right in our town.
