I have a youth size drum set that I purchased used from Rocktec on Bloomfield Avenue and paid $185 several years ago, so I would like something for them. The set needs new drum heads. Any budding drummer out there would get good use from it. Make me an offer.

If interested, you can contact her at (973) 509-9644 or email her. Hope it makes a lucky kid really happy. Maybe you can get her to throw in a bottle of Excedrin for the headache that you may get from all the banging.
Have something you’d like to list on our site? We’re willing to post it on Sundays, so shoot us an email.

Last week, we wrote about his heartbreaking story.
Kai needs a bone marrow transplant. You can help by going down to the Montclair Family YMCA tomorrow and take a simple cheek swab test to see if you are a match. If you are, donating bone marrow is a simple out-patient procedure.
Here are the details…

Bone Marrow Donor Drive for Kai
Who: Anyone over 18.
What: Bone marrow donor drive for a little boy named Kai, who just turned 5. He was recently diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of leukemia and his only hope for survival is a bone marrow transplant within the next 3 months. Getting tested for compatibility takes only a few minutes. To see if you are a match, all that is required is a simple cheek swab, and a little paperwork. If the marrow is a match, donors are asked to undergo one of two minor, non-invasive outpatient procedures. It is that simple to give someone a second chance at life.
Where: The Montclair YMCA Family Center, 159 Glenridge Avenue, Montclair, NJ, 07042.
When: Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Cost: Free. For more information contact Sarah Colwell.

Action-packed with a Mt. Everest-like climb, mock snow, ice and rocks? At Barista Kids, we don’t normally cover stuff going on the other side of the Hudson, but we had to make an exception for this cool event.
Montclair Mom Anne-Marie Nolin is the Head of Communications at The Rubin Museum in New York City, and she’s helping plan the fourth annual night at the museum, called Peak Adventure: Himilayan Sleepover.
Montclair kid Rachel Rosenberg, a sixth grader, attended last year. “It was amazing,” she said. “The whole adventure seemed so real, and I made a lot of new friends. I met Luis Benitez and sherpas and a monk.” See Luis, a mountaineering expert, Rachel, her friend Sonia Abrams and another new buddy in the photo at left.
Get the details on the jump page…

Peak Adventure: Himalayan Sleepover
Who: Kids ages 9 to 12
What: Sleepover adventure for 40 kids. They’ll work together to confront the physical challenges, perils and team dynamics of climbing Mt. Everest. Meals are provided, including a traditional Tibetan breakfast.
Where: Rubin Museum of Art
150 West 17th Street
New York, NY 10011
When: Saturday, June 13 through Sunday, June 14
Cost: $175 per child, registration limited to 40. (And it’s filling fast, Nolin said this week.) Register online or call 212-620-5000, ext 344.
If only I were still 9. I did an overnight at a museum once, and I remember exactly how much fun I had. I also remember not sleeping at all, but sleep is over-rated anyway.

We don’t have to live in Brooklyn to be cool. Here in the New Jersey suburbs, we have our very own all-woman roller derby league, and some of these rollergirls are moms.
Garden State Rollergirls is a skater-owned and operated organization established in 2006 to bring this classic sport to New Jersey. They’re bum-rushing Branch Brook park this Friday for their 3rd Annual Charity Bout to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. I first heard about Rollergirls on Baristanet, and next year, I just may try out myself. Maybe.
We spoke to one of the league’s top skaters, Belle N. Somebashin’ (AKA Jeannine Corey of Nutley) about balancing her love of skating with parenthood. “My son has 40 of the most interesting aunts a kid could hope for,” she says. “Not many kids get Christmas gifts and birthday cards from their Aunt BoneSaw.”

Jeannine, mom to 8-month-old Cameron, has always loved roller skating and martial arts. She was one of the founders of the league and got involved to meet friends with similar interests. This reminds me of why I got my library card, but that’s another story. Anyway, Jeannine was obsessed with the A&E docudrama about the Texas roller derby league.
Her love was born. Literally speaking, too. She skated until 3 weeks before she delivered her son. “No contact of course, I just did endurance and conditioning,” she says. She delivered 100 percent naturally with a midwife, and then she went right back to skating six weeks afterward. “I wanted to make sure I held to that part of myself and served as a role model to my son. He shouldn’t be afraid to try things he’s interested in, even if they’re off the beaten path.”
Practices are at night after Cameron goes to bed. But sometimes the baby goes to practices and likes watching the ladies whiz past him. He’s only been to one roller derby, called bouts, so far. “My husband thinks it might be too loud for him at this point.” (Wise, but maybe the mom who took her baby to The Shins concert would disagree.)
Will her son skate? “Derby is a culture and way of life,” Jeannine says. “We’re big on blance and as much as I love it, I want Cameron to find things that mean this much to him.”
Seeing all the perfectly sharpened multi-colored rows of wax inspired me as if I were Van Gogh. If it was the big box of 64 with a sharpener attached, it was better than Christmas. I get that feeling again when we visit one of my favorite day trip destinations, The Crayola Factory.

The Crayola Factory is in Easton, Pennsylvania, just a little over an hour away. It’s not the actual manufacturing plant, but you get to see how crayons are made daily at one of the exhibits. The two floors of the museum are filled with hands-on activities that are fun for all ages. There’s Inside Out, a clear wall tunnel that kids are allowed to color on with markers, a painting area that allows you to put your wet masterpiece in a dryer oven so it’s ready to take home in minutes, Cool Moves, an awesome psychedelic color kaleidoscope that records your dance moves and then projects it on a giant screen in cool colors and patterns and so much more.

When you’ve had your fill of art supplies, there’s another museum in the same building. The National Canal Museum is on the 3rd and 4th floors and admission is included in your Crayola Factory ticket. It has a 90-foot canal system and kids get to pilot their boat through the canal locks. The museum is a step back in time offering a hands-on experience of life on the canals in the 1800s.

When you’re ready to eat there are many places to choose from in the area, but our favorite is Pearly Bakers Alehouse. The burgers are awesome, they have great beer on tap and everyone was nice to my loud 23-month-old who decorated the floor with mac n’ cheese.

We went again two weeks ago. Both of my girls had a blast, we had a great lunch and we got home in time to order a pizza and get the girls to bed.
