Kids Create: Paper Cut Outs

paper_craft.jpgLast week, I was all inspired by Cezanne. He was the catalyst I needed to dig into my bookshelves and get out my art books for ideas on things to do with my son.

I got out my favorite Matisse book and showed Alan the wonderful cut-outs Matisse did in his later years. The wonderful shapes and colors got him excited. We set out to make out our own paper cut outs. Matisse was brilliant at getting the composition, scale and colors just right. As for us, we tried our best…

Make your own Cut Outs

You’ll need:
1. Brightly colored construction paper
2. White paper
3. Glue sticks
4. Scissors (I bought a pack of scissors with different decorative edges.)
Do:
1. Cut out lots of different shapes
2. Lay them all out to form your composition
3. Glue the shapes onto the construction paper

Tips:
1.My son wanted to make hearts like the original. We traced cookie cutters and then he cut from there as I helped.
2. After you have it layed out the way you like, take a picture. That way you will not forget how to glue them down.
3. If you don’t have any colored construction, paint some paper and then do your cut-outs. Matisse’s were actually done with gouache painted on paper.

As always we love to see your creations….please email us them to us!

this is a really great idea. my twin sons are really into ripping paper right now, so this is right up their alley! i’ll help with putting the glue on the paper, and they can sprinkle on the pieces confetti-style. can’t wait to see what masterpieces they’ll create.
