What to Do After Summer Camp and Before School

The end of August and the beginning of September is tricky for working parents. Summer camps are finished, but school hasn’t started. What to do with the kids when you have to work? If you live in Montclair, you’re really scrambling for coverage, because school doesn’t begin until Monday, September 13. Most Baristaville schools are closed for Rosh Hashanah. If you aren’t observing the holiday, you may need coverage as well.
If you have family who will watch the kids, you’re lucky. A babysitter is another option, but that will get really expensive.
Luckily, there are some cheaper options out there:


Vacation Camps
South Mountain YMCA Vacation Camp
Who: Kids in Kindergarten through 5th grade.
What: The days will include games, sports, field trips, art & crafts and a variety of other
activities scheduled throughout the week.
Where: South Mountain YMCA, 13 Jefferson Avenue, Maplewood, NJ.
When: August 30 – September 3 and September 9 and 10. Full-day available (7:15 am – 7 pm)
Cost: Members – $70 a day / Non-members – $85 a day. (Early fee of $ 60 per day for members, if registered by August 13.) Space is limited to the first 50 registrations. Download your registration form here.
Little Live Y’ers Vacation Camp
Who: Kids ages 3 (must be 3 by 10/01/10 and fully potty-trained) through kindergarten who have parents scrambling for childcare.
What: A day filled with fun activities: swimming, gym, arts and crafts and more!
Where: The Helen and Bill Geyer YMCA Family Center, 159 Glenridge Avenue, Montclair, NJ, 07042.
When: Tuesday, September 7 – Friday, September 10. Kids can be dropped off as early at 7:30 a.m. and picked up as late as 6:30 p.m.
Cost: Members – $45 a day / Non-members – $55 a day. In order to reserve a space for your child, payment and a registration form must be completed for
each date attending. You must register within 3 business days prior to the program date.

Live Y’ers Vacation Camp
Who: Kids in grades 1 – 8 who have parents scrambling for childcare.
What: A day filled with fun activities at Camp at the Lake.
Where: Camp at the Lake, Montclair YMCA facility in West Milford
When: Tuesday, September 7 – Friday, September 10. Kids can be dropped off as early at 7:30 a.m. and picked up as late as 6:30 p.m.
Cost: Members – $45 a day / Non-members – $55 a day. In order to reserve a space for your child, payment and a registration form must be completed for
each date attending. You must register within 3 business days prior to the program date.

Vacation Station
Who: Kids in Pre-k through 6th grade.
What: Learn how to do magic on Magic Day, take a trip to Turtleback Zoo, ride on over to Wild West City, go bowling and take in a movie, plus end the week with Carnival Day at the J.
Where: JCC Metrowest, Cooperman JCC, 760 Northfield Avenue, West Orange, NJ.
When: August 30 – September 3 from 9 am – 4 pm. Before/after camp care hours (7:30 am – 6 pm) available.

Camp at The Little Gym
Who: Kids ages 3 – 8.
What: Themed camp fun including gym play, arts & crafts, group activities and more.
Where: The Little Gym, One Greewood Avenue, Montclair, NJ, 07042.
When: August 30 – September 3 from 1 pm – 4 pm.
Cost: Schedule a day, a few days or the week.You can customize your child’s camp days to fit your schedule: 5 day week: $172, 4 day week: $146, 3 day week: $116, 2 day week $82, 1 day week $42.
Parteaz Princess Camp
Who: Ages 3 with a parent or caregiver / ages 4 and up – drop off
What: Enjoy a little make believe everyday with this Princess Camp. Bring your lunch they’ll supply the “tea” (pink lemonade) party.
Where: Parteaz, 1860 Springfield Avenue, Maplewood, NJ.
When: August 30 – September 2 from 11 am – 12:30 pm.

Ashley Sports Domain Soccer Camps
Who: 3 programs: ages 3-4 / 5-8 / 9-14
What: Soccer camp where skills, rules and fun will be had.
Where: Brookdale Park Turf, Montclair / Bloomfield, NJ.

Cost: $135 per week.
Floyd Hall Arena Figure Skating Camp
Who: Classes for all ages and levels.
What: Various level figure skating camp. Check here for classes.

Chef Lab’s Young Kids Cooking Camp
Who: Mini chefs ages 7 – 11.
What: A 4-day cooking camp where kids will learn valuable lifelong skills. Chef Robin will train students in the fundamentals of cooking techniques. Student will have fun while learning to follow recipes, make soups, sauces and learn to roast, grill and bake.
Where: Chef’s Lab, 345 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair, NJ, 07042.
When: September 7 – 10 from 9:30 am – 11:30 am.
Cost: $195 per child.
