Walk to School and Thank Your Crossing Guard

Wednesday, October 6 is International Walk to School Day and Crossing Guard Appreciation Day. Schools all over Baristaville are getting involved and participating by organizing group walks or rides (bikes are good–cars are bad).

Who’s walking? The following schools signed up at WalkToSchool.org and left these messages:

Ridgewood Avenue School in Glen Ridge will participate for the first time this year. Principal Michael Donovan says, “This is the 1st year RAS will be participating in the event. The local police, bike stores and bike organizations have been gracious in providing free training for kids, extra safety for kids on the day of the event and help to get bikes in shape for a good ride to school.”

Jefferson School in Maplewood is signed up too. “International Walk to School Day is the kick-off event beginning at Orchard Park, which culminates on school grounds with a walk-a-thon to raise funds for the school.”

Most Montclair Schools have signed on, despite being a magnet school system, which makes it very difficult for many kids to walk to school. Charles H. Bullock School says, “We’ve just moved into our incredibly beautiful, eco-friendly new school. Right now, we are very focused on creating safe, walkable routes, and crossing areas.”

Edgemont Montessori School is very excited about the event, “Students and their families or caretakers, who walk or bike to school, will be welcomed and congratulated as they arrive on the morning of the event. Fresh fruit and water will be offered, along with Walk to School stickers celebrating each students achievement. Finally, in a school-wide memo the Edgemont School PTA and principal will proudly recognize event participants, as well as encourage continued walking and biking efforts throughout the school year.”

Watchung School is pledging to do this all year. “Our goal is to have a Walk to School Wednesday every month.”

Whether you walk or drive, remember to show your crossing guard some love with a thank you, card or even flowers. Wednesday is also Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.

Do you plan to walk (or bike) your kid to school?
