Today, people bicker on Facebook about which is better: Team eReader or Team Hardcover. We forget that we all have a love of books in common. And that love sprouted from reading materials we picked up at libraries, schools and bookstores. Not so long ago, bookstores reigned supreme with their best sellers, staff picks and mazes of shelves. What adult hasn’t lost track of time in a passionate quest for bound reading material at a bookstore?
To pass along the sentiment to young readers, the first annual Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day takes place this Saturday, December 4, at 31 bookstores nationwide. TYCBD was created by local mom Jenny Milchman who also happens to be a suspense writer. Montclair’s very own Watchung Booksellers will celebrate by bringing in a puppet maker while Milchman passes out special snacks.
Here’s what Milchman has to say…
“Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day is designed not to just get kids reading, but to expose them to the unique pleasures spending time in a bookstore can bring. Once I began to get the word out about this day, people really took to the idea, and now dozens of bookstores across the country will be hanging posters and planning special events to host it. It’s been blogged about, tweeted, and given Facebook pages.”
Most people would agree, bookstores can be special. After all, you can’t huddle up in a quiet corner of an iPad to sort through a stack of picture books with your preschooler. What do you think is special about bookstores?
