So the big day is here. You have done your shopping, sent your cards, planned your menu, rented Happy Feet and March of the Penguins. That’s right folks, it’s PENGUIN AWARENESS DAY! And you are ready for it. But wait! You have nothing to wear! Okay maybe you do, if you want to drag that tux out of the closet. But what will the kids wear? How about a penguin hat?

For real, this was super easy to make, no sewing–just glue.

Here is what you will need:

  • Black hat, fleece or knit works
  • Black sock
  • Colorful sock
  • Black, yellow, white, orange, and any color you want for the scarf
  • A pom-pom
  • A ball
  • String
  • Glue (white glue or a low temperature glue gun)

Hat available at any children’s store, felt and pom-poms available at I Have a Notion in Montclair, A.C. Moore and Michaels.

  1. Cut a long strip of felt for the scarf about an 1 1/2″ thick.
  2. Put the ball in the black sock and tie with string.
  3. Cut the sock for the hat and pull the finished end over the head. Then fold up the finished edge.
  4. Cut the eyes and beak from felt.
  5. Stretch the felt and fringe the ends by cutting with a scissor
  6. Glue eyes and beak on penguin face and cut excess sock
  7. Pinch top of penguin’s hat and glue together to make a point then glue on pom pon
  8. Glue penguin’s hat to it’s head
  9. Glue the penguin head to the top of the hat then tie the scarf around to hide the string and glue.
  10. You can paint white highlights on the eyes and markings on the beak

Now your kids can enjoy Penguin Awareness day to the fullest!
