Do you have a Tween or Teen? If you’re not shipping them off to sleepaway camp this summer, this list of local day camp options will help. If you are looking for a sleepaway camp, we have some great options for you in our list coming this week.

There is a camp for all types of kids: the artist, the athlete or the kid who likes to travel. Not every camp is listed, but we are constantly searching for more options. We will continue to update throughout the summer. If you know of a great camp that’s not on our list, please send us an email.

YMCA Camps

South Mountain YMCA Pre-Teen Adventure Camp
Where:
Maplecrest Park, Maplewood & South Orange Community Pool, Maplewood, NJ.
Who: Grades 5 – 6.
What: These camps follow an extensive travel schedule with trips each week to places such as: Dorney Park, Mountain Creek, Laser Tag, Dave and Busters, NY City, Great Adventure, bowling, ice skating, fishing and local beaches.
When: June 27 – August 26 from 9 am – 3:30 pm. Before and aftercare available for an additional fee.
Cost: $930 each three week camp.

South Mountain YMCA Teen Adventure Camp
Where:
Maplecrest Park, Maplewood & South Orange Community Pool, Maplewood, NJ.
Who: These camps follow an extensive travel schedule with trips each week to places such as: Dorney Park, Mountain Creek, Laser Tag, Dave and Busters, NY City, Great Adventure, bowling, ice skating, fishing and local beaches. Teen Campers (7th-8th graders) can attend one overnight trip per session, including a camp-out at the beautiful Fairview Lake YMCA camp grounds.
When: June 27 – August 26 from 9 am – 3:30 pm. Before and aftercare available for an additional fee.
Cost: $930 each three week camp.

Summit Area YMCA Teen Trek Camp
Where: Watchung Reservation
Who: Kids ages 11 – 14.
What: This trip and travel camp offers daily adventures spanning New York, Pennsylvania, and of course the great state of New Jersey. Teen Trek is designed to foster a sense of adventure, to increase cultural awareness, to break out of everyday comfort zones, and of course to enjoy the summer.  Some points of interest this summer are: Six Flags, Dorney Park, Sandy Hook, Tubing down the Delaware River Water Gap, Mountain Creek Water Park, Newark Bears Baseball Game, Round Valley Recreational Area, Miniature Golf, Museum of Natural History, Bronx Zoo, Brooklyn Aquarium,  and much more!
When: Offered weeks 1 to 9.
Cost: $300 per week

Summit Area YMCA Teen Expedition to Costa Rica
Where:
Costa Rica
Who: Kids ages 13 – 17.
What: This adventure offers teens the opportunity to take part in real conservation projects while being exposed to the wonders of Costa Rica. Experience the region’s varied cultures, major ecological zones and vast wildlife. This trip provides hands-on opportunities to explore the biodiversity of the region. Teens will work directly with Costa Rican communities to make sure these projects succeed and support a more economical and  environmentally sustainable lifestyle. Great way to earn volunteer service hours for school.
When: July 11 to July 21, 2011.
Cost: $2,800 (airfare included). Valid passport required.

Summit Area YMCA CIT Program
Where:
Watchung Reservation
Who: High school students.
What: Take part in this exciting and completely redesigned, week long summer leadership program for teens.  Spend half of the day with your CIT Coordinator learning the ins and outs of becoming a great camp counselor and then put your skills to the test in the afternoon as you assist real counselors!  Community service hours awarded.  All potential CIT’s must apply for their position.
When: Camp offered weeks 1 to 9
Cost: $125 per week/$250 per session (Membership required)

Montclair YMCA Teen Travel Camp
Where: Montclair YMCA, 25 Park Street, Montclair, NJ, 07042.
Who: Teens ages 13 -15.
What: Summer program of field trips to places that teach leadership. Social and cultural awareness and community service.
When: June 27 – August 26 (9 one-week sessions) from 7:30 am – 6:30 pm (or later, depending on trip destination) Camp day starts at 8:30 am; campers can leave starting at 5 pm.

Explorers Camp at the Family Y
Where: Geyer Family YMCA, 159 Glenridge Avenue, Montclair, NJ, 07042.
Who: Children ages 9 – 12.
What: A fun-filled summer program with activities such as swim, games, trips to local attractions and more!
When: June 27 – September 2 (10 one-week sessions) from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm.  Before Camp hours offered from 7:30 am – 8:30 am. After Camp hours offered from 3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Montclair YMCA Camp at the Lake
Where: Montclair YMCA facility in West Milford.
Who: Children ages 6-12.
What: Full program offering swim lessons, sports, nature, outdoor survival skills, boating, fishing and more. Transportation is provided from 8 convenient locations.
When: 10 sessions: June 27 – September 2 from 7:30 am – 4:30 pm After camp hours offered from 4:30 – 6:30 pm.

West Essex YMCA Pioneer Trails Day Camp
Where: Caldwell College, 120 Bloomfield Ave in Caldwell, NJ.
Who: Kids in Pre-K – 8th grade.
What: Campers enjoy a fun, traditional camp experience plus Nature Discovery Program, Film Making at the computer lab, Camp Clubs and so much more.

The Handywork Studio Camps
Where: Montclair State University, Little Falls / Montclair, NJ.
Who: Kids in kindergarten – 10th grade.
What: The Handwork Studio is a kids’ needle arts and fashion camp. Its purpose is to pass down the tradition of teaching practical arts such as knitting, crocheting, hand and machine sewing, embroidery, quilting, fashion and crafts in a fun and relaxed environment. Several camp options available: half-day, full-day, afternoon program and machine sewing for older kids.
When: All camps offered in August for week long sessions.
Cost: Afternoon camp – $155, Half-day – $275, Full-day – $395, Machine Sewing – $465.

Montclair Art Museum – SummerART
Where: Montclair Art Museum, 3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07042
Who: Kids ages 5 to teens.
What: SummerART Camp provides four two-week sessions of thematic programming during which children will work in various mediums. Children will work in mediums such as drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, collage, printmaking and digital media.Visits to the Museum’s galleries are included to enrich the child’s knowledge of fine arts.
When: June 28 – August 20. Children are grouped into ages groups: 5-7, 8 and 9, and 10-12. Ages 5-7 can choose either morning session (9:30 am – 1:45 pm) or afternoon session (3 pm – 5 pm). Ages 8-12 can choose any option.
Cost: Ranges from $330 – $840 per session, depending on age and length of day. Discount for museum members. Online registration is now open for Museum members; Opens March 8, 2010 for non-members. Online registration opens February 28th for Museum members; March 7, 2011 for nonmembers.

Express Yourself Studios Summer Art Camp
Where: Express Yourself Studios, 1912 Springfield Avenue, Maplewood, NJ.
Who: Artists ages 5 -8 and 9 – 12.
What: Children will experiment with a variety of media in a fun and supportive environment. They will be encouraged to use their imagination freely as they learn about Master Artists. Campers will create 10-15 art projects per week. Projects will include painting, drawing, mixed media collage, sculpture, printmaking and paper mache. An exhibition and reception featuring students’ artwork will be held at the conclusion of each week.

Rock Paper Scissors “Make Your Own” Sewing Camp

Digital Photography For Kids
Where: Throughout Montclair.
Who: Kids ages 13 – 18.
What: Taught by Montclair artist and Rowan University Professor, Keith Adams, this week long course includes field trips shooting throughout Montclair, discussions of best practices, informal critiques of student images, and review of contemporary and historical photographs. Students will learn practical techniques and artistic approaches to digital photography, from the idea to the final image.
When: 6 sessions to choose from June 27 – August 26.

Specialty Camps

Magic for Muggles Summer Program
Where: Magic for Muggles, St. John’s Episcopal Church’s Parish Hall, 55 Montclair Avenue, Montclair, NJ.
Who: Harry Potter fans ages 8 – 13.
What: Program, led by two Montclair teachers, that brings the magic of Hogswarts school alive: playing quidditch, wand making, HP Jeopardy, discovering magical creatures, and making House banners.
When: 4 sessions – the weeks of June 27th, July 5th, July 11th, and July 25th from 9 am – 1 pm daily.

Gesher Summer Camp
Where: 110 South Orange Avenue, Livingston, NJ.
Who: Kids in Pre-K - 10th grade.
What: The only Jewish ACA-accredited camp in Essex County. Gesheris a nurturing environment that welcomes all Jewish children, providing a safe, unique and fun-filled experience. The camp is equipped with two swimming pools, separate girls and boys changing rooms, indoor and outdoor tennis and basketball courts, a team challenge ropes course, a brand new waterslide, tevah (nature), a unique Israeli Culture program, a Kosher indoor cafeteria, a soccer field, a 600-seat auditorium, two gaga pits and a kings wall, plus many other areas to facilitate all of our special activities.

Zoo Camps

What: Campers will be introduced to the extraordinary world of animal, nature, science.

Apple Camp
Where: Local Apple stores (Willowbrook Mall, Short Hills Mall and Garden State Mall)
Who: Kids ages 8 -12.
What: Learn the ins and outs of iMovie and how to make a film in about the time it takes to watch one. From storyboarding to shooting footage to editing, kids will create their own film from start to finish. The workshop, held at the Apple Retail Store, spans three days and leads up to an Apple Camp Film Festival where campers debut their masterpieces.
When: 8 three-day workshops available throughout the summer.

The Oval Camp – Girls Scouts Heart of New Jersey
Where: South Mountain Reservation, Maplewood, NJ.
Who: Girls in grades 1st – 9th.
What: An outdoor camp providing fun and educational experiences designed to give girls opportunities to learn, grow and make friends.
When: Offered from 1 – 6 weeks from July 5 – August 12.
Cost: $215 – 230 per week. Attend the Open House on April 30 from 1 pm – 3 pm.

123Comics Academic Superhero Summer Camp
Where: 1882 Springfield Ave, Maplewood, NJ.
Who: Kids in 1st grade - high school.
What: An enrichment program, which enhances both creative and educational skills. Kids begin by creating their own superhero, either hand-drawn or computer generated and continue to develop comic strips, comic books and online movies.
When: Half-day or full-day options from June27 – August 19.
Cost: Half-Day – $145 per week / Full-day – $230 per week.

Children’s Summer Program at The Adult School
Where:
South Orange Middle School, South Orange, NJ.
Who: Kids in grades 1 – 12.
What: The program offers more than 100 classes in academic enrichment, creative arts and sports. The range of choices includes creative classes, academic enrichment, games, sports, and more. There’s something for every child, including: Acting, Art, Math, Printmaking, Mosaics, Karate, Knitting, Hip Hop, Comics, First Aid, Computers and Science. The sports camps are for children and teens entering grades 1-12. They run in mornings, 9 a.m. to noon, in four one-week sessions and include co-ed baseball, fencing, soccer, gymnastics and track & field; boys lacrosse and basketball; and girls lacrosse.
When: June 27-July 22, 2011.

Eco-Explorers Summer Camp
Where: Montclair State University, Little Falls / Montclair, NJ.
Who: Kids ages 11-14.
What:Combines guided field trips with recreation activities to notable natural sites. At each site, the students will conduct a scientific investigation regarding the biology, chemistry or geology of the site. During the week, students will work on a presentation that shows what they have done and learned. This fun and educational program begins with a student orientation and a tour of Montclair State University, its research facilities and computer lab. Students will be given a digital camera for use during the field trips to help with their presentations,and will be instructed in the use of field equipment. Each day the students will be taken on a field trip to significant natural destinations, including: The Great Falls of the Passaic River, A boat tour of the Meadowlands, The Bonsal Preserve in Montclair, South Mountian Reservation in West Orange andVerona Lake Park.

Montclair Mud Fun Camp
Where: Kaveny Field-behind the fences of the baseball field, enter near the corner of Walnut and Christopher Street, Montclair, NJ, 07042.
Who: Kids ages 5 – 14.
What: A youth led festive summer event with live drums, food, barefoot mud stomp dancing and mud building/sculpting activities! The building of Adobe [sun baked mud] shelters is a tradition that stretches back thousands of years in all climates around the world. Campers will help design and make earthen structures that will remain in Kaveny Field for public viewing.
When:July 11-15 and July 18-22. Monday through Friday, 9:30 am-12 pm. Each Friday afternoon from 6:00pm-8:oopm there will be a community celebration and demonstration featuring food, Essex Diversity Youth Theater Group, drumming, and more!
Cost: $95 for each week, individual days are available at $25 a day

Teen Chef Healthy Eating Camp
Where:Whole Foods Market Millburn- Union, 2245 Springfield Avenue, Vauxhall, NJ.
Who: Kids ages 13 -1 6.
What: A week filled with food and fun, including cooking instruction, food diary, notebooks, cooking tools, embroidered Teen Chef apron and, of course, a delicious meal freshly prepared by camp attendees every day.
When: July 11-15 from 12 pm – 4 pm.

Language Camps

Bilingual Buds Summer Camp in Beijing
Where: 5-star hotel apartment accommodations in ZhongGuanCun, Asia’s “Silicon Valley”
Who: Designed for children ages 4-12, accompanied by a parent (or parents)
What: Bilingual Buds takes Mandarin immersion “on the road” with this unique summer travel experience. During the day, students attend our Beijing partner programs, joining native students for playful learning in Mandarin. Puppetry, painting, cooking, calligraphy, and martial arts make up a small taste of what’s explored. The expansive curriculum reaches beyond the classroom as students enjoy everyday interaction with Chinese culture, customs, food and friends. Parents are busy with a daytime “curriculum” of their own, experiencing the enchanting city of beloved Beijing.

Bilingual Buds Summer Immersion Camp: Mandarin or Spanish
Where: 587 Springfield Avenue, Summit, NJ.
Who: Kids ages 2 1/2 – 10 are divided by age and language proficiency (beginners welcome).
What: Bilingual Buds offers a hands-on, “minds-on” immersion approach to summer language camp. Attend one or more sessions where all instruction (and play) takes place in Mandarin or Spanish, including projects, games, experiments and fine arts. Students tackle creative class themes that range from great inventions, to fantastic field trips, to weird and wonderful science. The school’s native-speaking teaching staff promotes a high-energy, collaborative environment for young language learners.

Big 5 Soccer Camps

When: Boys week:  June 27th – July 1st / Girls week:  July 5th – 8th / Co-Ed Advanced Skills week:  July 11th – 15th. Camp runs from 5 pm – 7 pm.
Cost: $175 per week.

Prime Time Summer Arts – Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts
Where: 87 Mount Hebron Road, Montclair, NJ, 07043.
Who: Children ages 6 – 14.
What: Full-day program offering daily classes in art, music, dance and drama. Each session ends in a free public performance.

Camp Rocks at The Gravity Vault Indoor Rock Gym

Gas Lamp Players Lights Broadway Summer Camp
Where: 37 Clinton Road, Glen Ridge, NJ.
Who: Children in grades k – 7.
What: Will pick up the story of the Broadway musical beginning with the end of the Golden Era. Program will cover the emergence of Stephen Sondheim, the rise of Bob Fosse and Kander & Ebb, the advent of the rock and mega-musicals, straight up to the first Disney musical, The Lion King.  Summer 2011 promises to be exciting, challenging, and lots of fun.
When: The program will run Monday – Thursday from 9:30 am – 2:30 pm, beginning Tuesday, July 5 (because of the July 4th holiday).  Performances are Thursday night August 4 at 7 pm, Friday night August 5 at 7 pm, and Saturday August 6 at 2 pm with a cast party and set strike to follow.
Cost: $625 per child.  Two or more children per family: $600 each.  Pay in full before January 1, 2011 and take $25 off the tuition per child.  Financial assistance is available.

Gas Lamp’s Theater Tech Program
Where: 37 Clinton Road, Glen Ridge, NJ.
Who: Kids in 7th grade and up.
What: Gas Lamp Tech (GLT) will cover the craft and art of the visual and technological components of theater. The four major areas of study will be set, lights, sound and costumes/properties.  Students will learn from professional theater designers and technicians, who will introduce them to the specialized technical and artistic skills required to work on stage productions.

Camp Junior Museum

When: The day is 9 am – 3:40 pm for children ages 5-15.  Bright Beginnings Children, ages 3 & 4 attend  from 10 am – 2 pm.

Spectra Academy Summer Camp
Where: Wyoming Presbyterian Church, 432 Wyoming Avenue, Millburn, NJ
Who:
Teens ages 12 and up on the autism spectrum.
What: Spectra Academy serves children and adolescents who function well in most areas but struggle with social skills and peer relationships.We provide a structured yet stimulating environment where youngsters can learn certain skills to interact more competently with their peers. Spectra Summer Camp offers video production, geocaching, cooking, go karts, volleyball, laser tag and more.
When: weeks of July 5 and July 11 from 9 am – 4 pm.

Special Needs Camp @ SDA
Where:Soccer Domain Academy, 14 Depot Square, Montclair, NJ, 07042.
Who: Ages 3 – 16.
What: Fun, all-level camp with sports, games, water play, social skills and much more.
When: Four one-week session from July 5 – August 5. Full day from 9 am – 4:30 pm /. Morning only from 9 am – 12 pm / Afternoon sessions from 1:15 pm – 4:30 pm and 2:15 pm – 4:30 pm.
