SOMA Libraries Pack the Calendar with Summer Fun

Looking for ways to fill those long, lazy days of summer? Your library may be your best bet. Both the Maplewood and South Orange public libraries have filled their calendars with all sorts of activities, for all ages. And all of it, free.

Additionally, the Summer Reading Club program is gearing up for the season, and this year’s theme for libraries all across the state is One World, Many Stories. The Summer Reading Club is designed to encourage kids of all ages to read (or be read to) by awarding them small prizes throughout the season for the reading they accomplish. Maplewood Public Library is taking the program one step further by also awarding prizes for participating in library programs. To this end, they’ve planned fun events all summer long.

“Library programs can also be as important as reading: they provide opportunities for social, educational and literacy-based learning in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere,” said Jane Folger, the Youth Service Coordinator at Maplewood Memorial Library.

Both the Maplewood and South Orange libraries will be kicking off the season and the Summer Reading Club on Monday, June 27,with a host of fun activities from jugglers to live musicians, face painting, arts and crafts and more. Read on to see what’s happening this summer.
