October is the start of my least favorite season–flu season, and it will be here soon. Over on Baristanet you’ll find information for adults regarding flu vaccines. Here on Barista Kids we’ve got the 411 on children and the flu shot.

This year’s flu strain is the same as last year’s, however the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is recommending that children get vaccinated again. Flu vaccine only lasts from 6 – 8 months, so your children will need another dose or two to be protected.

According to the AAP:

This year’s flu vaccine protects against the same 3 strains of influenza virus in last year’s vaccine. These are

  • Influenza A (H3N2)
  • Influenza A (H1N1)
  • Influenza B

The number of vaccine doses your child needs this year depends on his age at the time the first dose is given and his flu vaccine history.

  • Children 6 months through 8 years of age should get 2 doses if they did not get a flu vaccine last year and 1 dose if they did.
  • Children 9 years and older need only 1 dose.

Early fall is the best time to get vaccinated, however the AAP says you can still be protected if you get a flu vaccine as late as March, April, or May.

While you’re making your child’s flu shot appointment, you might want to schedule one for yourself too. The CDC recommends, “Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year.”
