Ask Holly: The Love Wreath

February, without a doubt, can be a dreary time of year. I am convinced that if Valentine’s Day were in May it would not be such a popular holiday. There is something about those flecks of red and pink in windows around town that just make us smile. My children and I have a fun tradition every year of putting up Valentine peel-off window-stickies and heart-shaped red doilies all over the house. We had so much fun last year cutting out dozens of paper roses for our Valentines, that this winter I started cutting them out of felt while I relaxed (I never just sit) in front of the T.V. at night. They were so beautiful mounding up in a basket I had to make something with them. And so the wreath of love-and roses was born.

Here is what you will need:

Materials

  • A Styrofoam wreath form
  • Pink yarn
  • Felt in pinks, reds, white and green
  • White glue, hot glue or pins
  • Red or pink ribbon (optional)
  • A pink marker or pink paint (optional)

Step One: Cut a long piece of yarn and wrap it around a piece of small piece of cardboard to make wrapping easier. Starting in the middle on the side of the heart and glue the end of of the yarn to the what will now be the back of your wreath. Now start wrapping the yarn around and around the wreath form pushing the yarn somewhat tightly making sure no white is exposed. If wrapping the yarn becomes too much just make more roses to cover the wreath. I only covered as much as the wreath with yarn that was not covered with roses. TIP ONE- for areas that are difficult to cover use a bit of paint the same color as your yarn on the bare spot.TIP TWO-When wrapping the top point of the heart start at the highest point of each hump and work you way to the point. Image 2

Wrap with yarn and glue on back

Step Two: Make roses in a variety of sizes and colors. For instructions to make the roses click here.

Step Three: To make two toned colored roses color the inside of the felt spiral with a pink marker before rolling into a rose shape.

Step Four: Cut out leaf shapes in different sizes and iron a crease in the middle.

Step Five: I pinned my roses on my wreath first to place them then with hot glue I glued the roses and leaves in place

Step Six: To hang the wreath glue a loop of ribbon or a strip of ribbon depending on where your are hanging it from on the back

Making a two toned rose

I loved the way the yarn looked in contrast with the roses but it does take time a patience to wrap the yarn. Making the roses is quick and easy. You could skip the yarn altogether and just paint the wreath pink and cover it with roses and It would look gorgeous!
