There is no excuse for your kids to stop reading just because school is out. Your local library and bookstore are making it easy and enjoyable with summer reading programs and incentives:

Glen Ridge Public Library kicks off its “Dream Big Read” Summer Reading program today, June 18. With three programs offering children from ages 2 through 18 prizes and incentives, it’s a sweet deal.

Maplewood Memorial Library kicks off its “Dream Big Read” program today too.

Montclair Public Library’s Summer Reading Club kicks off on June 22. This year’s theme is also “Dream Big Read.” To celebrate the start of summer reading, MPL will have the imaginative sounds of Alex & the Kaleidoscope Band entertain with two concerts that day: 11 am and 1 pm. With 15 national awards for excellence including a Parent’s Choice Recommendation and Best Song for Children from the Independent Music Awards, Alex & The Kaleidoscope Band engage audiences of all ages with their interactive and world-music infused performances. Audiences sing, clap and dance with the band making uplifting memories that will last a lifetime! After the show be sure to enroll in the Summer Reading Club in the 3rd floor Youth Services Department!

West Orange also throw a big kick-off with a Mr. Ray concert!:

West Orange Public Library Summer Reading Kick-Off
Who:
All ages.
What: Kick-off the Summer Reading Program with a free concert starring Mr. Ray and a party to celebrate West Orange’s 150th Birthday on the Library Lawn at 7pm.
Where: West Orange Public Library, 46 Mt Pleasant Avenue, West Orange, NJ.
When: Thursday, June 28
Cost: Free.

Watchung Booksellers in Montclair has started a Family Book Club, in which families can read the selected book together and join to discuss, do some fun activities and eat pizza!

For July, the picks are My Father’s Dragon for ages 6 – 9 and A Wrinkle in Time for ages 10 – 13. Check here for details.

Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program will give your child a free book when they read 8 books and log them in a reading journal.

Here’s How:

  1. Read any 8 books and record them in the Reading Journal
    (PDF)
    .
  2. Bring the completed Reading Journal to your local B&N store.
  3. Choose a FREE BOOK from the selection on the Reading Journal list at the store!
Your local TD Bank is also offering a sweet deal. If you open a Young Saver account for your child, TD Bank will deposit $10 into her/his account if she/he reads 10 books this summer:

1. Read 10 books this summer. See suggestions.
2. Print out the Summer Reading Form
3. Write down the names of the books they’ve read
4. Take the form to the nearest TD Bank
5. Watch $10 be deposited into a new or existing Young Saver Account
