Columbus Day: What To Do With the Kids

Monday, October 8 is Columbus Day and kids in some school districts have the day off. If you have to work, we’ve put together a list of vacation camp options and if you happen to be off with your kids, we have some ideas on how to spend the day:

Fun Things to Do

1) Go pumpkin picking!

2) Go to the Met:
Met Holiday Monday
Who:
 Kids ages 5 – 12 and their families.
What: The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be open to enjoy fun discussion and sketching!
Where: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue, NYC.
When: Monday, October 8 from 9:30 am – 5:30 am.
Cost: Suggested admission – Adults $25 / Kids under 12 Free.

3) Take a Day Trip!

4) Take a Hike:
Half-Day Holiday Hike
Who:
 Kids in k – 2nd grade must be accompanied by an adult. Kids in 3rd grade and up may be dropped off.
What: Spend some time at the overlook spotting migrating hawks and learning about their behavior and characteristics. In addition, a hike in the woods will allow students to investigate how the woodland creatures are getting ready for winter and studying fallen leaves and seeds will provide a lesson about local trees.Children must bring a bag lunch and water.
Where: Essex County Eagle Rock Reservation
Essex County Eagle Rock September 11th Memorial, Eagle Rock Avene, West Orange, NJ
When:
 Monday, October 8 at 9 am

6) Go see Hotel Transylvania!

7) Go to a festival!
Harvest Festival
Who: 
All ages.
What: Fun-filled family day with pony rides, a petting zoo, pumpkin painting, a haunted house, crafts and more.
Where: Women’s Club of Glen Ridge, 219 Ridgewood Avenue, Glen Ridge, NJ.
When: Monday, October 8 from 11 am – 2 pm.
Cost: $16

 

Vacation Camp Options

Earth Skills One Day Camp
Who:
 Kids in grades 2 – 4.
What: How did humans live hundreds of years ago when they had to rely on their own woodland knowledge and skills to survive? Students will discover and learn as they hike in the wetlands with rubber boots (provided), make clay pots, cord, fire-by-friction and more.
Where: Essex County Environmental Center, Garibaldi Hall621A Eagle Rock Avenue, Roseland, NJ.
When: Monday, October 8 from 9:30 am – 3:30 pm.
Cost: $60. For information, call 973-228-8776.

Little Live Y’ers Vacation Camp
Who: Kids ages 3 – 6.
What: A day filled with fun activities: swimming, gym, arts and crafts and more!
Where: The Geyer Family YMCA, 159 Glenridge Avenue, Montclair, NJ, 07042.
When: Monday, October 8 Kids can be dropped off as early at 7:30 a.m. and picked up as late as 6:30 p.m.
Cost: Members – $50 a day / Non-members – $60 a day. In order to reserve a space for your child, payment and a registration form must be completed for each date attending. Please register within 3 business days prior to the program date. Registration received in less than 3 days prior to camp will be charged an additonal $10 fee.

Live Y’ers Vacation Camp
Who: Kids in grades 1 – 8.
What: A day filled with fun activities.
Where: Montclair YMCA at Hillside School, 54 Orange Road, Montclair, NJ, 07042.
When: Monday, October 8 from 7:30 am – 6:30 pm
Cost: Members – $50 a day / Non-members – $60 a day. In order to reserve a space for your child, payment and a registration form must be completed for each date attending. Please register within 3 business days prior to the program date. Registration received in less than 3 days prior to camp will be charged an additonal $10 fee.
