Montclair students throughout the district spent Martin Luther King Day doing acts of service—a day “on,” instead of off.
See some kids’ service in action in our slideshow. It contains students from Hillside Elementary School, Glenfield Middle School and Charles H. Bullock School serving and learning about the legacy of Dr. King:
Hillside students read to the kids at Live Y’ers vacation camp at the Geyer Family YMCA, collected donations for the Human Needs Food Pantry at Kings Supermarket, and assembled gift bags for the residents of Real House Inc. women’s shelter.
At Bullock School, students made doves and hands to add to a mural, used the words from Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech to create phrases and add them to the word wall, and colored in portraits of MLK Jr. and made them into pins to wear. Families cooked, packed, and delivered meals and colorful messages to local senior citizens. Everyone enjoyed the Montclair Academy of Dance and Laboratory of Music drummers performance, as well as music by the Glenfield Middle School band.
