Mother's Day

WINNER: Congratulations to bloomingmom!

Last year, I shared how I once treated myself with a night at nearby Westminster Hotel. I thought it would be the perfect giveaway for Mother’s Day and last year we offered a weekend stay and spa treatment to one lucky mom. I don’t need to tell you how popular the giveaway was, so we’ve decided to do it again.

The Westminster Hotel is a perfect getaway and a chic, luxury hotel designed with clean lines and leatherbound furnishings that strikes the perfect balance between contemporary style and classic comfort. There is a small, serene spa on site and a beautiful indoor, atrium lit pool. You can enjoy a delicious meal at Strip House, a striking steakhouse, bar and lounge.

My mom is an amazing woman. She’s an inspirational, independent lady and I love her to death. She’s a single mother who works her butt off to provide for me and my sisters and winning this would mean the world to her. I love her so much and I couldn’t live without her. She is without a doubt my hero.

I’d like to nominate my wife for this. My wife and I just had our 2nd child in January. Aside from having our 4-5 year old, our newborn was born with a liver issue. By the time 30 days old he had blood drawn 14 times. At 30 days he underwent surgery for a possible kasai procedure and I hate to admit but the worst part was when the doctors told us to say our goodbye’s as if our son was never coming back to us. He pulled through and mom has been as strong as she could be for everyone. Next week our son will be 4 months old. We have been in and out of the hospitals and aside from buying medicine, special formula “pregestimil”, maintaining our home and lifestyle, and working 50+ hours a week each I’d say my wife deserves a little break. She is the best mother anyone could ever ask for and more. She is the world to me and the kids.

    Thank you,

My beautiful wife is the best mother in the world (sorry, I’m biased) to our 16 month old daughter. She is also pregnant with our second and could use a couple nights sleep, room service, girlie movies in bed, and time to herself. She is also a frequent visitor to Baristanet – so Jess – if you are reading this, early Happy Mother’s Day and I love you!

My sister was let go of her job several years ago. Despite her constant networking and interviewing, she’s been struggling to stay afloat with 3 kids. She still managed to work as one of the head volunteers for the Office of Emergency Management for her town during Hurricane Sandy as well as get her kids involved helping entertain the other kids. And she regularly volunteers at a battered woman’s shelter. She could really use a break and some pampering.

My mother is gone now. She passed away the same weekend as the Columbine shooting. Having been a teacher for much of her life and living in Wheatridge at the time, I think the event was just too much for her heart. When my brother and I were saying goodbye to her, we stopped by the school to lay some flowers in her memory at the foot of a mountain of other flowers. It was a touching and very emotional time.

Having been abandoned by our father, my brother, three years old, me five and mom were not in a very good spot, but she was a lioness and was able to get a job at the ‘Bruce Street School’ for the deaf in Newark. She couldn’t drive so she walked from our place on Grove St. in East Orange, down to Newark and back every day. Later she got her teaching certificate at MSC and taught at Elmwood Elementary school in East Orange.

Emily won’t win this contest, but my vote is for the ‘working, single, mother’ out there – there has to be one in this crowd – one of the most courageous beings there every will be.

I nominate my wife of 45 years, the guiding light for our son who wrestles with a number of challenges, still holds down a full time sales position and was a dedicated and inspirational soccer coach for 5-6 year olds back in the days when the Montclair Stars was just being formed. I love you, sweetie !!

I live in Germany now, my Mom, a Montclair resident has been visiting for a week now with my Daddy and brother. She is EXHAUSTED from traveling, and still has a week more to go. She NEEEDS this well deserved break. Walking around for hours every day….WITH a foot problem. She´s a champ!

I’d really like it for myself. :P But… I will nominate all of my girls in the New Jersey Digital Moms group. They are #jerseystrong – all beautiful, all powerful in their own right. And all of them are deserving of a night away and a little pampering! Oh, but, if I win, they’ll have to fight over the weekend getaway at The Westminster Hotel. Maybe you shouldn’t pick me after all. Haha! #njdmoms for life!

My two sons became the first male college graduates on my side of the family mainly sue to the dedication and perseverance of my wife in assuring that they did well in school. She just retired after over 40 years of employment. I smile when I hear our nieces complaining about how hard it is raising their kids.

I have 2 girls 7 & 9 and then we went back and did it all over again and now having a happy bouncing baby boy! He is the apple of my eye, but boy oh boy am I tired and in need of a little pampering and a little peace and quiet. Between being a working mom the girls activities and a new baby I’m wiped.
Well that is my 2 cents.

  38. POSTED BY numbuh1chef  |  May 01, 2013 @ 6:09 pm

i would love to have this getaway after working 40+ hours a week in the food industry and working every single weekend plus holidays in the industry that I am in for one weekend out of the year it would be nice to be pampered and relax. Also taking care of my four year old daughter while my husband is going to school full time isnt easy and after working 10+ hours a day and then come home take care of my daughter and being up for about 18 hours a day i need some relaxation. Plus all the money i make goes directly to bills, food and gas, i never have any left over even for a chocolate dose every now and then and it would be nice just to have something for me and not be burning the light at both ends.

A mother in its very own distinct term relates self sacrifice. That is precisely why I am nominating my mother for this getaway. Growing up, I had learned the definition of altruism through the eyes of my mother. Most of my childhood represented trials, tribulations, grievances, and heartbreak. When I was the tender age of 15, my father had passed away leaving two bold women striving to survive against the world. Life had created a whirlwind around us that was engulfing our beings. We were financially unstable, emotionally torn, and pulled toward angst and anguish. My mother aiming to support her child, created a stable environment noting that her child’s life was in the balance. She used all the funds she could muster through selling her belongings and working overtime at her part time employment, to provide for my basic needs. She utilized her sole monetary gain to ensure I was not only physically fed but emotionally and cognitively fulfilled with a high level education. With this concept in mind, my mother had surrendered all personal necessities as well as any type of luxuries to guarantee that I had the proper schooling to thrive in my adulthood through the obtainment of a degree. Through her benevolence, generosity, and patronage, I am currently a Registered Nurse, now able to save the lives of others and provide high quality care to patients. My mother has given up everything for her only daughter throughout her existence and has never been rewarded. Instead she has been plagued by more tribulations. Unfortunately at this time she is unemployed, in financial ruin without any money to support herself, and risks becoming homeless. Rather then be in this current situation, she should be granted with incentives and compensation. I hope to give her the reward she deserves with this prize. She wholeheartedly has earned it.

My wife could use this — she’s got a very demanding job on top of being a great mom to our eight-year-old, and more than anything she never lets herself just relax. This might do the trick, though! :-)

  53. POSTED BY bloomingmom  |  May 05, 2013 @ 11:42 am

Like many other mothers in the area, I have 2 kids under age 5 that I stay home with all day…every day. Running them all over the place and taking mommy & me-style classes. I think we could ALL use a break and a spa trip, but I sure hope I win!!!
