Halloween parties, parades, haunted houses and much more kick off this month, allowing you and your kids to enjoy the spooky Halloween spirit for weeks before the big day arrives. There are great family events in our area and beyond and we’ve searched high and low for as many as we could find. Make sure to check back often, as we”ll continue to update with even more Halloween happenings!

Who:
 Families
What: Montclair Center will partner with Matarazzo’s Farms and Barista Kids for a Children’s Pumpkin Contest! Families may purchase pumpkins from Matarazzo’s Farm and paint them with the Montclair Center BID. These pumpkins will then be taken to stores in Montclair Center to be part of their Fall Window Displays! Barista Kids will judge and announce the winners online. (Larger Pumpkins and apples will also be available for purchase).

Bloomfield Scream on The Green Halloween Spooktacular
Who:
 All ages.
What: Enjoy Light refreshments, trick or treating, bean bag toss, guess the weight of the pumpkin, costume contest, pumpkin patch and pumpkin painting, followed by a MAGIC SHOW!
Where: Civic Center and Town Green, Bloomfield, NJ (In the event of rain, the party will be held at Bloomfield High School.

Creature Double Feature II : The Mummy and The WolfmanCreature Double Feature II: The Mummy and The Wolfman
Who:
 Ages 7 and up.
What: Hedgehog & Feather Theatre Co.  in Westfield will perform some spooky fun children’s theater for Halloween! “Creature Double Feature II : The Mummy and The Wolfman and has 28 young actors from the area performing two tales of creepy monsters that pounce on you!

Halloween in Disguise Cooking Class
Who:
 Ages 5 to 9.
What: Celebrate Halloween! There is nothing spooky about these recipes. Come and have some fun!

Boo at the Zoo
Who:
 All ages.
What: Every weekend in October, head to the Bronx Zoo for Boo at the Zoo which includes magic shows, puppet shows, scary stories, costume parades, a hay maze, pumpkin painting, and more. See website for a full list of events and fees.

The Haunted Pumpkin Garden
Who: 
All ages.
What: Experience the thrills and chills of the season with a garden full of intricately carved pumpkin sculptures, bugs, bats, parades, and more. New this year, the Haunted Pumpkin Garden features creepy creature encounters every weekend and the largest Spooky Nighttime Adventures trail ever! On October 19–20, watch master carver Ray Villafane of Food Network fame transform humongous pumpkins into unearthly creatures. It’s so much fun, it’s scary!

The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze
Who: All ages.
What: Master pumpkin carvers spend hours building large sculptures out of individual jack o’lanterns. As you walk through, you’ll see dinosaurs, a giant spider web crawling with spiders, a beehive buzzing with bumble bees, and a pirate ship complete with a crew of scalawags all come to life.

The Great Pumpkin Patch

What: Treats, face painting, balloons and pumpkins at the annual Sotheby’s Great Pumpkin Patch.

PhilharMONSTER!
Who:
 Kids ages 8 – 12 and their families.
What: Gear up for Halloween as the young goblins and ghouls of the InterSchool Orchestras of New York’s Carnegie Hill Orchestra (ages 8 to 12) and ISO Symphony (ages 12 to 19) perform spooky orchestral classics for the whole family. Selections include The Sorcerer’s ApprenticeNight on Bald Mountain, and spooky movie music fromPirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter. What: Kidville and Montclair Mommies 24/7 throw a Halloween party with music form Rockin’ Railraod and other fun. Food for purchase at food trucks.

Fifth Annual “October Tails”
Who:
 Dogs and their families.
What: A Halloween dog walk fundraiser, dog costume parade contest, children’s activities, music, food and more to benefit St Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center.  Special guest emcee Maria Milito of Q104.3 FM will be in attendance. Proceeds will fund Paws for Patients, a canine therapy program offered free of charge to patients served by Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Centers.

What: Visit Sesame Place during its month long celebration of Halloween—The Count’s Halloween Spooktacular. Sesame Place will be transformed into a not-too-spooky Halloween haven featuring two themed mazes, a character hayride, three Halloween shows and everyone’s favorite Sesame Street friends dressed in their Halloween attire.

What: Pumpkin Carving at the Field Station!  Go carve pumpkins with carving artist Robert Carr. Bring your own pumpkin or buy a pumpkin at the Field Station.

Baby Loves Disco Halloween Party
Who:
 Families with children ages 6 months – 7.

Pumpkin Carving Fun at Montclair Art MuseumPumpkin Carving and Decorating at MAM
Who:
 All ages! (Parent or guardian must accompany children).
What: A spooktacular evening of festive hair-raising fun as MAM hosts a pumpkin carving and decorating night. Get ready for trick or treating by coming in costume or come as you are and unleash your creativity! Adults are welcome too. Parent or guardian must accompany children. Seasonal refreshments will be available. Pumpkins, art supplies, and tools provided.

Halloween Pipe Organ Spooktacular!

 Tweens an older.
What: Thomas Mustachio will improvise an atmospheric sound track on the sanctuary’s mighty pipe organ for this groundbreaking 1925 silent film, The Phantom of the Opera. Fresh popcorn will be available too.

Spooky Zoo

What: Celebrate this ghoulish time of year by visiting the Turtle Back Zoo at night! There will be animal presentations, games, crafts, activities, and more! Not so scary train ride until 8 pm then – NEW this year – scary train ride from 8-9 pm parental guidance suggested.

The Pumpkin Hunt
Who:
 Kids in pre-K -  3rd grade.
What: A giant pumpkin hunt, with 500 mini pumpkins hidden throughout the park. In the spirit of sharing it is recommended that no bags, boxes, or containers be used to gather pumpkins.

Spooktacular Halloween Bash
Who: 1.5 – 5 year olds with caregiver
What: Messy Artist Fun with a Halloween Twist!  Decorate a trick-or-treat bag, play with slimy spaghetti, paint with fall colors and more!

Family Fun Halloween Event and Concert
Who:
 Kids of all ages with their parents.
What: Get into the Halloween spirit at Central Presbyterian Church’s Family Fun Halloween Event. Children and their families start up in the choir loft to hear Central’s Music Director Jonathan Hall play spooky-fun organ music.  Then there will be childrens’ crafts, games, and treats for all.  Don’t forget to wear your costume!

State Scare: Maim Street Haunted Attraction
Who:
 Brave kids and their parents.
What: Really scary haunted house show.
Where: Located adjacent to the State Fair Halloween Superstore, 229 Main Street, Belleville, NJ. (Right off od Rt. 21)
When: Now through – November 2 from 7 pm – midnight. Not-so-Scary Kids’ Sunday Matinees from 2 pm-6 pm ($8 a person and adults must be accompanied by a child age 12 and under.)
Cost: $35 For Rapid Processing Ticket (VIP), $20 for general admission. Not So Scary Matinee $ per child under 12.

The Intrepid Halloween on the Hudson
Who: All ages.
What: Join the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum for a frighteningly-fun day!  On October 30, the Museum will be open late, until 8 pm, so visitors can make the most of trick-or-treating, face painting, a Monster Mash Dance Party, Halloween-themed arts and crafts, and more! Or sit back and enjoy the family-friendly movie Hocus Pocus (two screenings; seating on a first-come, first-served basis).

Halloween Spooktacular ConcertThe WPU Symphony presents A Halloween Spooktacular Concert
Who:
 All ages.
What: Halloween chills and symphonic thrills provide a treat for all ages, as costumed musicians perform haunting darkly-themed masterpieces. Come in costume, participate in the Halloween parade, and “boo” the orchestra. Dracula and the crypt keeper have already purchased their tickets!

Halloween Event at the Junior Women’s Club of Verona
Who:
 All ages.
What: The Junior Woman’s Club of Verona is hosting a Halloween event open to the public (who RSVP) at Verona library on Saturday, October 26 at 10 am.  Kids will do a craft, hear Halloween stories, and play Halloween games.
Where: Verona Public Library, 17 Gould Street, Verona, NJ.

4th Annual Halloween 5K to End Cervical Cancer and Promote HPV Prevention
Who:
 All ages.
What: Our course is certified and sanctioned with UST&F and is a relatively flat course, for walking or running! Come join the fun, there will be an after party and medal ceremony at Just Jake’s immediately following with entertainment. All children 12 and under receive a medal for participating! Costumes are strongly encouraged but not required!

Haunted House
Who: Brave kids (recommended for 4th graders and up, but an early session for younger kids)
What:  Several rooms of the Civic Center will be decorated and transformed into a haunted house that will be sure to make you scream out loud! Strobe lights and smoke machines will be in use!

What: A Montclair first—Trunk or Treat! Go trick or treating, but instead of houses, you’ll get your loot from participating neighbors who drive their cars in with filled trunks. Sponsored by the Montclair Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs, Barista Kids and the MFEE.

Maplewood Halloween Parade and Costume Contest
Who:
 All ages.
What: This annual event is sponsored by the Maplewood Village Alliance and Maplewood Chamber of Commerce. The festivities include trick or treating, music and dancing and prizes for best costumes.
Where: Maplewood Village between Baker Street and Durand Road, Maplewood, NJ.
When: Thursday, October 31 from 3 pm – 6 pm

Halloween Portraits
Who: Families
What: On Halloween take the kids to have their portrait taken at Best Friend Photography. Photos will be displayed on their Facebook page. There is no cost for the session but this year they will be collecting groceries for the Montclair Human Needs Food Pantry.  If you bring a small bag of non-perishable groceries they’ll  provide you with a high resolution file of your portrait that you can share and print.  You will also be entered in a drawing for a free portrait session!

Going Batty Halloween Drop-in Craft
Who:
 Kids ages 2 – 5.
What: Drop in and make a bat finger puppet before trick or treating!

Old Man WhippleOld Man Whipple’s Haunted Walk
Who: Brave trick or treaters of all ages.
What: Visit a super spooky Montclair Halloween house tradition.
Where: 182 Alexander Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07043
When: Thursday, October 31 beginning at 4:30 pm.
Cost: Free, but donations are greatly appreciated.

Trick or Treating in Montclair Center
Who: Kids
What: No tricks just treats!  Montclair Center will be getting into the Halloween spirit! Stores with the attached sign in the window will be giving out candy to trick-or-treaters in costume and our BID Ambassadors will be handing out Halloween goodies throughout the day!
