Celebrate Rosh Hashanah with Kids

At sundown on Wednesday, September 24, the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, is celebrated. For many Jewish families, it is a holiday of reflection and renewal, as well as a time to share a holiday meal with family and friends.

There are plenty of ideas online for making a festive Rosh Hashanah meal. Barista Kids contributor Anna Sandler gets inspired  by the recipes at The Shiksa in the Kitchen – particularly  her Apple Honey Challah and she’s a huge fan of her Oven Roasted Root Vegetables.

For celebrating the holiday with kids, she recommends heading over to Creative Jewish Mom and choosing a Rosh Hashanah craft from her huge selection. Most are good for mixed ages, and utilize common items you’re likely to have at home. You can make Stuffed Paper Shapes for Rosh Hashanah or Woven Paper Apples.

Sunday, September 7 is National Grandparents Day. 

According to GrandparentsDay.org, the holiday is rooted in the work of two committed and passionate pioneers: Jacob Reingold and Marian McQuade. They wanted to honor grandparents and the elderly. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter made it official and proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.

Why not celebrate Pop-Pop with a hug? Make this card with your kids to give to that special Grandma, Grandpa, Nana, Pop-Pop, Gram and Poppy — whatever you call your grandparents:

Passover begins at sundown on Monday, April 14 and continues for seven days. It’s a joyous holiday for Jewish people, as it’s a celebration of freedom.

A favorite part of the Passover Seder for children is finding the afikoman (a large piece of a matzah that is hidden during the Seder). Children search for the afikomen and usually receive a prize for finding it.  This easy handmade afikomen bag will become a cherished family keepsake.
